Grow Your Vegetables Indoors
Indoor vegetable gardening can be challenging but need not be difficult – there are various criteria that need to be addressed before starting your indoor vegetable garden.
Vegetables which are grown indoors require a large amount of light to grow well and to produce a good crop. It is not so important for general house plants if we want them to just survive but if we are to grow a vegetable crop then a good quality level of light will be required.
There are numerous types of grow lights suitable for indoor vegetable gardening – the imporrtant issue to remember is that the light has the correct light spectrum for producing superior growth and fruiting results.
For the indoor vegetable gardening project choosing the most appropriate plants is the most crucial issue to consider. One of the plants which will grow well indoors is tomatoes - they grow upward to get a lot of light and they do not require much space.
Other than tomatoes, herbs also make good indoor plants – they like well drained soil and a good supply of fresh air. Rosemary, mint, thyme and parsley also do well indoors.
In the majority of cases, root vegetables will not grow well indoors as they need a larger
depth of soil and this is not easy to provide for in an indoor situation.
Another essential thing we must do in indoor vegetable gardening is treating pests, however, generally speaking they are not too much of a problem as you can control the environment a lot more. We do however, need to be aware of the pests that target different vegetable plants like the red spider mite in tomatoes which can have eggs on them when you buy your seedlings.
Indoor Vegetable Gardening Pests
It is also important to check your house plants as pests can be transferred by you to your new vegetable seedling in your vegetable growing area. It would be useless buying the perfect vegetable plants but putting it near another plant that has an aphid infestation. Spraying indoor plants to eliminate pests is usually quite effective, alternatively plant garlic with tomatoes to deter red spider mite.
If we require an intensive growing method that the full control of water and nutirent levels as well as light for your vegetables then hydroponics is an excellent solution for indoor vegetable gardening. Hydroponic equipment does not need to be very expensive. For lighting we use grow lights and easy to use starter kits are also available for indoor vegetable gardening novices. Systems can then be expanded more as your needs and skills develop.
